It would be best if you did not use the phrase “free credit report” on a Google search because most of the links that will appear are for websites that are not free. These websites often require you to provide personal information, such as your Social Security number and full name, to generate a credit report. One problem is that identity thieves can use your information to commit identity theft.

In addition, some of these websites may charge you a fee for the credit report, even though they advertise it as free.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned consumers about the dangers of using websites that offer free credit reports. The FTC recommends that consumers only get their free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, a website authorized by the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

To get your free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, you can:

  • Go to AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Create an account and provide your personal information.
  • Select the credit bureaus from which you want to request your reports.
  • You will receive your reports by mail within 7-10 days.

You are entitled to a free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once per year. You can request your information anytime, but you can only get one report from each bureau per year.

Checking your credit reports regularly for errors is essential. If you find any errors, you should dispute them with the credit bureaus.

Here are some tips for staying safe when getting a free credit report:

  • Only get your free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Do not provide your personal information to websites that you do not trust.
  • Be wary of websites that charge you a fee for a free credit report.
  • Credit reports can have errors, so be looking for them.

Following these tips can protect yourself from identity theft and other financial crimes.
